More than 100 high school students representing 14 schools across the county gathered on Thursday for the 2026 Inspiring the Leader in Youth Forum at Florida Southern College. The full-day leadership experience focused on this year’s theme, G.R.I.T. – Growing Resilience, Initiative, and Tenacity, equipping students with practical tools to navigate challenges and pursue their goals with determination.

Leadership Lakeland Alumni Association President Bill Langston opened the morning session, setting the tone for a powerful day of learning and reflection. Students then heard from three distinguished alumni speakers whose personal stories embodied grit in action.
Alisha Martin shared her journey following a horrific accident that nearly changed the trajectory of her life, offering a powerful testimony of resilience and perspective. Jen Lay spoke candidly about navigating uncertainty and choosing to pave her own path forward with initiative and courage. Dr. Lauren Albaum encouraged students to focus on taking the next step, demonstrating how steady, intentional progress leads to long-term success.

Students enjoyed a guided campus tour of Florida Southern College and connected over lunch at Wynee’s Bistro, where the soft serve ice cream on tap was a favorite highlight of the day.
The afternoon session featured an engaging alumni panel including Alisha Martin, Stephanie Colon, Dr. Lauren Albaum, Robert Lay, Jen Lay, and Heide Evans. Students asked thoughtful questions about leadership, setbacks, career paths, and staying motivated in the face of adversity.

The event concluded with giveaways and the presentation of two $500 scholarships to Florida Southern College.
A tremendous thank you to our sponsors, Suncoast Credit Union, LkldNow, and Optify, whose support made this impactful day possible.
The Inspiring the Leader in Youth Forum continues to grow each year, strengthening connections between young leaders and the community while investing in the future of Polk County.
